A Russian drone violated Romanian airspace and crashed into a residential building in the eastern city of Galați, near the border with Ukraine. The explosion caused a large fire and left several people injured, according to local authorities. The incident occurred on Tuesday night. Witnesses reported a loud explosion followed by intense flames in the apartment building. Emergency teams were quickly deployed to the scene, where they are fighting the fire and providing assistance to the victims. At this time, there is no confirmation of the exact number of injured or whether there are any fatalities.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the drone entered Romanian airspace from the direction of Ukraine and crashed in an urban area. Military sources indicate that it was a reconnaissance or attack drone, possibly a Shahed model or similar, widely used by Russia in the war against Ukraine. Romania, a NATO member, has already sent an official statement to the Atlantic Alliance. More than 30 embassies and representatives of the EU and NATO have issued statements condemning the incident, classifying it as an "unacceptable violation of the sovereignty of a NATO member country." Romanian President Klaus Iohannis convened an emergency meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense. "This is a serious act that cannot go unanswered," said a government source. Russia has not yet officially commented on the incident.

To date, the Kremlin has neither confirmed nor denied the involvement of its forces. The incident significantly raises tensions between Russia and NATO, as it is the first time a Russian drone has directly struck the territory of a NATO member country since the beginning of the conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced his support for Donald Trump’s plan to annex Greenland, a statement that has raised eyebrows across diplomatic and security circles due to the strategic implications it carries for both Washington and Moscow.

For the Kremlin, analysts argue, Trump’s proposal is doubly advantageous. First, it risks weakening NATO, a long-standing strategic objective for Putin, who has sought for more than two decades to fracture the alliance’s unity and credibility. Any dispute between the United States and European allies over Greenland would strain transatlantic relations and complicate NATO’s internal cohesion.

Second, Putin’s endorsement helps reinforce the logic he has repeatedly used to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Many of the arguments put forward by Trump in favor of annexing Greenland — including strategic necessity, historical claims, security concerns, and great-power competition — closely mirror the justifications Moscow has cited for its actions in Ukraine.

A strategic contradiction for Trump

At the same time, Putin’s support exposes a central contradiction in Trump’s narrative. The former U.S. president has argued that controlling Greenland is essential to counter the Russian threat in the Arctic and prevent Moscow from expanding its influence in the region.

However, critics note that if Greenland were truly a move designed to contain Russia, it would be counterintuitive for Putin to openly support it. The Kremlin’s approval raises questions about whether the plan genuinely serves U.S. security interests or instead advances Russian strategic goals by sowing division within the Western alliance.

“This is a rare case where Moscow is applauding a U.S. proposal,” said one European analyst. “That alone should prompt serious reflection in Washington and Brussels.”

Broader geopolitical implications

The Arctic has become an increasingly contested arena, with Russia, the United States, and China all seeking to expand their influence as melting ice opens new shipping routes and access to natural resources. Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, occupies a critical strategic position in this competition.

European leaders have repeatedly stressed that Greenland’s future must be decided solely by Greenlanders and Denmark, warning that any unilateral move would violate international norms and further destabilize an already tense global environment.

An unexpected alignment

Putin’s endorsement of Trump’s proposal highlights an unexpected convergence of interests between two leaders often portrayed as adversaries. While their motivations differ, the outcome — weakened NATO unity and blurred norms around territorial sovereignty — would align closely with long-standing Russian objectives.

As debates over Greenland intensify, the episode underscores how geopolitical signaling can sometimes reveal more through who supports an idea than through who opposes it.

In an unexpected and high-impact diplomatic turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered direct peace talks with Ukraine without preconditions, proposing that they be held on May 15 in Istanbul.

“We are ready for serious negotiations,” Putin said in a brief televised appearance from the Kremlin.

The Russian president also announced that he will hold talks with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, this Thursday to request support in organizing talks on Turkish soil, which has historically acted as a mediator between Kyiv and Moscow.

The offer comes amid a prolonged military stalemate and strong international pressure for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, which has already claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions of people.

The Ukrainian government has yet to issue an official response, but sources close to President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that the announcement is being evaluated with "utmost caution" and in consultation with Western allies.

European leaders and multilateral organizations have reacted with cautious optimism, although many emphasize the need for concrete guarantees from Moscow.

Turkey, which has maintained relatively balanced relations with both sides during the war, could play a key role as host and facilitator of this potential diplomatic turning point.

Russia has launched 183 attack drones against Ukrainian territory in the last 24 hours, in what Ukrainian authorities are calling one of the largest airstrikes since the start of the invasion in 2022.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the attack targeted energy infrastructure, urban centers, and strategic positions in at least seven regions of the country. Most of the drones were Iranian-made Shahed drones, which have been widely used by Russian forces in recent months.

“We are facing a significant escalation in the use of kamikaze drones. Air defense has managed to intercept a significant portion, but some have hit their targets,” said Ukrainian military spokesman Andrii Yusov.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, calling it “a systematic campaign to destroy our cities and break civilian morale,” and called on Western allies to strengthen the supply of air defense systems and munitions.

At least 12 people have been injured and material damage to electrical installations and private residences has been reported. The capital, Kyiv, experienced a night of nonstop sirens and explosions in the surrounding area.

In an unexpected twist, Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a ceasefire on the occasion of Victory Day, May 9, one of the most symbolic dates for Russia. According to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, this initiative seeks to be the starting point for direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv, which have been stalled for months.

"The proposal for a ceasefire is not just a symbolic gesture, but an open door to a serious diplomatic process," Lavrov told state media, adding that "the ball is now in Kyiv's court."

However, the offer comes in a contradictory context: Russian forces have intensified their offensive operations in recent days in at least three eastern Ukrainian provinces, including Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Luhansk. Ukrainian officials describe the proposal as a maneuver to gain tactical advantage before a new phase of fighting.

In Kyiv, Volodymyr Zelensky's government has not yet officially responded, but sources close to the cabinet affirm that any ceasefire proposal must be accompanied by an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from occupied territories.

The international community, especially the UN and mediating countries such as Türkiye and China, are closely monitoring diplomatic developments, while calls for a lasting cessation of hostilities are growing.

According to preliminary information, the impact caused significant damage to a nearby village, with reports of shattered windows and structures affected by the air displacement generated by the explosion. Videos circulating on social media showed a plume of thick smoke and secondary explosions, suggesting that ammunition stocks may have been hit.

The Kremlin has rejected the possibility of a temporary truce in the conflict with Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin stated at a press conference in Moscow. The proposal, which sought a 30-day ceasefire to facilitate negotiations and humanitarian assistance, has been dismissed by Russia, arguing that Kyiv would use the pause to strengthen its military capabilities.

"A truce would only benefit Ukraine, as it would give them time to receive more weapons from the West and reorganize their forces. We will not allow this," Putin said in his statement.

The Russian refusal comes amid escalating fighting in several regions of eastern Ukraine and amid growing international pressure to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government continues to request more military and financial support from its allies, especially after the recent diplomatic crisis with Washington, which called into question the continued US support.

Putin's rejection of the truce is also interpreted as a response to European movements that have begun to discuss sending troops to Ukraine in an effort to strengthen the country's defense against the Russian offensive.

With this stance, Moscow reaffirms its determination to continue the war on its own terms, maintaining pressure on Kyiv and its Western allies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his willingness on Thursday, March 13, to accept the US proposal for a temporary cessation of hostilities with his rival, but warned that it will only take effect if the underlying causes of the conflict, still unresolved, are addressed, among other requests.

Yes, but with conditions. This was Russian President Vladimir Putin's response to his US counterpart Donald Trump's proposal to pause the war in Ukraine for 30 days.

Some of these: that the truce paves the way for a lasting peace and that Ukraine does not use it to rearm; that negotiations address the root causes of the conflict take place; and that his forces succeed in expelling Ukrainian troops from the Kursk border region.

"We agree with the proposals for a cessation of hostilities," Putin told reporters at a press conference in the Kremlin after meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Thursday, March 13.

During the conference, Putin praised the troops who have made rapid advances in Kursk in recent days, before declaring that "depending on how the situation on the ground develops, we will agree on the next steps to end the conflict and reach agreements acceptable to all."

Kursk has been the scene of fierce fighting after falling to Ukrainian troops following a surprise incursion in August 2024. Since then, it has become one of kyiv's few trump cards in the game when negotiating territory with Moscow, which in turn claims to have recovered a large portion of this region, including the key town of Sudzha.

A Lasting Peace, Another of Trump's Demands

Another of the Kremlin leader's conditions is that the negotiations lead to a lasting, rather than temporary, peace. "There are issues we need to discuss, and I think we need to talk about them with our American colleagues and partners."

"Perhaps we should have a call with President Trump to discuss this with him," he added. White House special envoy Steve Witkoff is in Moscow and is scheduled to meet with Vladimir Putin this Thursday, according to Russian media.

A few hours after Putin's statement, and just as he was about to begin a meeting this Thursday in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Donald Trump called it "very promising, but incomplete."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already accepted the US proposal, while his American counterpart has agreed to hold a telephone conversation with Putin to convince him.

Russia invites Western companies to return

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, is the largest European conflict since World War II and has so far left hundreds of thousands dead. of dead and wounded, as well as millions displaced and massive destruction in dozens of cities.

It also sparked the sharpest confrontation between Moscow and the West in decades, triggering a massive flight of companies and the application of a cascade of sanctions that sought to stifle the Russian economy.

This Thursday, the Russian president stated that he would welcome Western companies back, although he warned them that the markets had been absorbed by domestic producers and that Moscow would not create special conditions for their return.

To companies that want to return, we say: Welcome, welcome at any time!

The president added that if Moscow and Washington had reached an agreement on energy cooperation, gas supplies to Europe could resume, which would represent a very significant milestone considering that, after the war began, Russia lost its position as Europe's main supplier.

"Zelensky's stupidity, and I say it with all the letters, for allowing himself to be manipulated by the Western Europeans, who do not know where they are going, whether towards Hitler, or towards nothing; they fight with their Slavic brothers and end up giving Ukraine to the Americans.
08:15
This is the agreement for the distribution of Ukraine's mineral resources with the US

Ukrainian sources consulted by the British newspaper Financial Times have explained that there is already a final draft of the agreement for the distribution of rare earths between Ukraine and the US, as demanded by Donald Trump. It is dated this Monday and establishes a fund to which Ukraine would contribute 50 percent of the income from the "future monetization" of state-owned mineral resources, including oil and gas.

However, the document omits any reference to the US security guarantees that the Ukrainian authorities had originally insisted on in exchange for accepting the agreement. It also leaves for later questions such as the size of the US participation in the fund and the terms of the "joint ownership" agreements.

Although neither of the two parties involved has yet publicly confirmed the agreement, Ukrainian officials have indicated that it has received the 'green light' from the ministers of Justice, Economy and Foreign Affairs. However, they added that it is only a "framework agreement", that the jurisdiction of the agreement remains to be agreed and that the approval of the Ukrainian Parliament is still pending.
