  • A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines on Tuesday, causing the collapse of several buildings and homes in different parts of the country. Shocking images circulating on social media show the moment structures collapsed and clouds of dust rose in urban areas. According to initial reports from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake's epicenter was offshore, off the east coast of the archipelago. Its relatively shallow depth increased its destructive potential. Immediately after the earthquake, authorities issued a tsunami warning for the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea. Residents of coastal areas have been preemptively evacuated.

  • The exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed, but widespread structural damage and people trapped under rubble have been reported. Emergency teams are already working in the most affected areas. The President of the Philippines has convened an emergency meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. “We are facing a serious situation. We ask the public to remain calm and follow the instructions of the authorities,” he declared. This is one of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the region in recent years and occurred in a highly seismic zone of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
