In an operation held in the Eyüpsultan district of Istanbul to smuggle historical artifacts, a golden Torah estimated to be approximately 1,200 years old was seized. Police teams detained 6 suspects who tried to sell the artifact for 1.5 million dollars.
According to the information received, the Anti-Smuggling Crimes Branch teams affiliated with the Istanbul Police Department determined that suspects were trying to sell a Torah for a high amount as part of their work against historical artifact smuggling. As a result of the technical and physical surveillance, an operation was conducted at the specified address in Eyüpsultan.
A rare Torah, which was stated to have a gold inscription and is estimated to be approximately 1,200 years old, was seized during the operation. The artifact was delivered to the Istanbul Archaeological Museums Directorate for detailed examination.
A total of 6 people were detained in connection with the incident, including 3 suspects who were caught red-handed while bargaining with the police posing as buyers. It was learned that the suspects' procedures at the police station are ongoing.
Authorities emphasized that the fight against smuggling will continue with determination in order to protect historical and cultural heritage, and it was stated that the seized Torah has great historical and artistic importance.
