According to the official statement, the flotilla—dubbed the "Freedom Flotilla"—had among its passengers both Palestinian leader Zaher Birawi, considered a central figure in the movement, and a young environmental activist known for leading global campaigns against the climate crisis.
According to Israel, the vessel was registered in Europe through the Spanish-based company Cyber Neptune, which served as a cover for the group's logistical operations.
The episode reignites debates about the use of civilian and environmental missions as a cover for political and military strategies in the Middle East. Analysts point out that, if the accusations are confirmed, the Israeli complaint could undermine the legitimacy of international solidarity movements for Palestine.
The flotilla was intercepted in international waters, and investigations are ongoing. Multilateral organizations have not yet commented on the allegations.
