Beatriz Corredor, appointed by the government as president of Red Eléctrica, earns 546,000 euros per year despite having no training in the energy sector.

Controversy has once again engulfed the electricity company Red Eléctrica de España (REE) after it was revealed that its current president, Beatriz Corredor, receives an annual salary of €546,000. The figure has sparked controversy because Corredor, a former Minister of Housing under José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, lacks specific technical training in the energy sector.
Corredor was appointed by the central government through an appointment from La Moncloa, which has rekindled the debate over the use of highly paid public positions as a destination for political figures without technical experience.
Criticism from the opposition and industry experts points to a worrying politicization of key positions in strategic infrastructure. “At a critical moment for energy security and grid management, it is unacceptable that technical experience is not prioritized in these positions,” said an industry spokesperson.
Red Eléctrica manages Spain's high-voltage electricity transmission system, making it an essential player in supply stability and the energy transition.
The government has not commented on the matter, while professional associations and some industry unions are calling for greater transparency in appointments and mandatory technical evaluations for high-level positions.
