Brazilian Juliana Marins, 26, has been missing since Friday (20) after falling approximately 300 meters during a trail on Mount Rinjani, one of the highest and most challenging volcanoes in Indonesia.

According to information from the local rescue group, Juliana was on an excursion with other tourists when she slipped in a steep area with poor visibility, near the volcano's crater. The search entered its fourth day today, but so far there is no sign of the young woman.

Dangerous and difficult to access location
Mount Rinjani, at over 3,700 meters above sea level, is famous among mountaineers for its beauty, but also for its dangerous trails and unpredictable weather. Juliana had apparently momentarily separated from the group to take a photo when the accident occurred.

Indonesian search and rescue teams, assisted by drones and sniffer dogs, are facing adverse weather conditions and unstable terrain.

“It is a very steep slope, with loose rocks and dense vegetation. We are mobilizing all possible resources to find her,” said a spokesperson for Basarnas, the agency responsible for the rescue.

Family in despair
Juliana's family, who live in Rio de Janeiro, were informed by Brazilian authorities on Saturday and are in direct contact with the Itamaraty. Her parents have left for Indonesia and are expected to arrive in Lombok in the next few hours.

“It’s a nightmare. We just want news, any sign. She’s strong, very experienced with trails, and we have hope,” said her mother, emotionally.

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that it is monitoring the case as a priority and is in communication with local authorities and the Brazilian Embassy in Jakarta.

History of accidents
This is not the first time that Mount Rinjani has been the scene of tragedies. The trail to the summit requires physical fitness, adequate equipment and specialized guides. In previous years, tourists have faced serious situations in the region, especially during the rainy season.
