Russia Declares International LGBTQ+ Movement an Extremist Organization
Russia's Supreme Court has declared the international LGBTQ+ movement an extremist organization, escalating repression against the community in the country.

Russia's Supreme Court has taken a drastic decision by declaring the “international LGBTQ+ movement” an extremist organization, leading to increased repression against the LGBTQ+ community in the country.
Since the ruling, authorities have stepped up raids on clubs, events and spaces frequented by the community, while activists and organizations have denounced an escalation in persecution and censorship.
The ruling, requested by the Russian Justice Ministry, states that any activity defending LGBTQ+ rights in the country could be interpreted as extremism, which carries prison sentences and severe penalties.
Various human rights groups have condemned the measure, calling it an unprecedented attack on individual freedoms and diversity. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have warned of the impact that this decision will have on the Russian LGBTQ+ community, which already faced severe restrictions under the so-called “gay propaganda law.”
While the international community reacts with concern, the Kremlin has defended the decision as a measure to “protect traditional Russian values” and prevent what it calls the “destructive influence” of Western movements on the country’s society.
