Following the historic blackout that affected Spain and several European countries, statements have resurfaced from an electrical engineer who, in March of this year, had already publicly warned about the fragility of the national energy system. “Red Eléctrica is not prepared for a cascading collapse,” he stated at the time, at a technical forum that went unnoticed by most media outlets.

The professional, whose identity is being withheld for work reasons, is part of a critical infrastructure analysis team and noted that contingency protocols were “obsolete” in the face of simultaneous threats such as cyberattacks or massive overloads.

“What happened these days doesn't surprise me. We already had signs that the system was not updated to respond to a sudden loss of generation like the one we saw. Clear technical warnings have been ignored for years,” he said in statements to El Observador Técnico.

The engineer's opinion gains strength after learning that more than 15 gigawatts of electricity generation were lost in just five seconds, as revealed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The collapse affected millions of users on the Iberian Peninsula and highlighted the vulnerability of the energy infrastructure to critical failures.

Although Red Eléctrica de España has announced an internal audit and the government promises to provide explanations, pressure is growing on the system's technical and political leaders.
