The Plenary Session of the Congress of the Republic of Peru failed to approve the motion to ban former President Francisco Sagasti from office for 10 years. The vote, held this Monday, fell short of the minimum of 66 votes needed, despite the broad debate surrounding the issue.

The initiative had been promoted by a group of parliamentarians who hold Sagasti responsible for alleged irregularities in decisions made during his transitional government, particularly in relation to the procurement of vaccines and alleged acts of omission during social protests.

During the session, several congressmen defended the institutional role Sagasti played during one of the country's most critical periods, while others argued that he should be held accountable for decisions deemed negligent.

Francisco Sagasti, for his part, has not issued any immediate statements, although in previous interventions he has maintained that the accusations have a political undertone and seek to tarnish his reputation.

The motion was shelved after the vote, although some sectors of Congress have announced that they will insist on other investigative mechanisms.
