US Announces It Will “Soon” Impose Targeted Tariffs on Electronic Devices
Washington confirms it will impose new targeted tariffs on electronic devices in the coming days, in an attempt to protect the domestic industry from Asian competition.

Washington, D.C., April 10, 2025 — The United States government announced Thursday that it will “soon” impose new targeted tariffs on imported electronic devices, as part of a renewed strategy to protect the domestic technology industry and respond to the trade imbalance with Asia.
The Commerce Department spokesperson indicated that these tariffs will affect key products such as smartphones, tablets, computer components, and certain household appliances, although the exact percentage and the affected countries have not yet been specified.
"The administration is committed to strengthening our domestic technological capacity. These tariffs seek to level the playing field for American manufacturers who have faced unfair competition for years," the spokesperson explained at a press conference.
Sources close to the White House affirm that the measures are primarily aimed at imports from China, although other Asian economies such as Vietnam, South Korea, and Taiwan could also be affected.
The announcement generated concern in business sectors, especially among technology companies that depend on global supply chains. The US Chamber of Commerce warned that this decision could raise prices for consumers and provoke trade retaliation.
Meanwhile, in Beijing, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce described the possible tariff increase as an "unjustified provocation" and indicated that it will respond with equivalent measures if it is implemented.
The measure is part of a growing trend toward protectionism in U.S. economic policy, which seeks to incentivize domestic production and reduce dependence on foreign inputs.
