In an unexpected shift in US foreign policy, former President and current presidential candidate Donald J. Trump met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara on Tuesday in a meeting confirmed by the White House, just 24 hours after the announcement of the lifting of US economic sanctions on Syria.
“President Trump believes it is time to turn the page and seek new agreements in the region,” said an administration spokesperson.
The meeting, held at an undisclosed location, marks the first formal contact at this level between the two countries since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011. Trump reportedly offered “support for reconstruction” in exchange for humanitarian and security commitments in the region.
A Controversial Geopolitical Move
The decision to lift sanctions has generated mixed reactions. While some business sectors applaud the opening as an economic opportunity, human rights organizations and parts of Congress have questioned the lack of preconditions for the lifting.
"This is a troubling normalization with a regime that has yet to be held accountable," declared Democratic Senator Elisa Warren.
For its part, the Syrian government called the meeting "historic and promising for a new era in relations with the West."
The international community is closely monitoring Washington's moves in the Middle East, especially following the recent shifts in its stance toward Iran and Turkey.
