In his first strong statement on international affairs since his election, Pope Leo XIV issued a strong condemnation of the war in Ukraine, describing the conflict as an "authentic invasion of an imperialist nature."

"What we are seeing is not a limited military operation or a legitimate defense. It is an authentic invasion, of an imperialist nature, where Russia seeks to conquer territory for reasons of power," the Pontiff declared from the Apostolic Palace before diplomats and the media.

The Pope's words resonate strongly at a time when new avenues of negotiation are being explored between Moscow and kyiv. The statement marks a clear stance by the new leader of the Catholic Church, who since his election has taken a more direct tone and is committed to human rights and global justice.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Cardinal Robert Prevost, originally from the United States, has been seen as a moderate but firm figure, and his stance on the conflict in Eastern Europe distinguishes him from his predecessor, who had adopted a more diplomatic and reserved approach in his criticism of Moscow.

"The Church cannot remain silent when human dignity and life are disregarded by the desire for conquest," he added.

The Vatican has confirmed that the Pope will seek to support diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives to protect civilian victims of the conflict, and has not ruled out sending a special representative to Ukraine in the coming weeks.

The statement has been greeted with praise from Western leaders, while Moscow has yet to officially respond.
