Nadine Heredia requests asylum at the Brazilian Embassy in Lima

Lima, Peru — The Peruvian Foreign Ministry reported this Tuesday that former first lady Nadine Heredia formally requested political asylum at the Brazilian Embassy, ​​located in the Lima district of Miraflores. Heredia entered the diplomatic mission in the morning amid growing judicial tensions over the proceedings against her.

According to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the asylum request has already been officially communicated to the Brazilian government, which must evaluate whether or not to grant the requested protection. The former first lady is facing investigations for alleged acts of corruption during the presidential term of her husband, Ollanta Humala (2011–2016), primarily linked to the Lava Jato case and the alleged illicit financing of electoral campaigns.

This move has generated a strong reaction in the Peruvian political and judicial sphere, given that Heredia had been under restricted appearance and faced restrictions on leaving the country. The possibility of her being granted international asylum rekindles the debate over judicial independence and the politicization of criminal proceedings in Peru.

To date, neither Heredia nor her legal representatives have issued public statements, and a statement from the Brazilian government is expected in the coming days. The Peruvian Foreign Ministry stated that it is coordinating with the Brazilian Embassy to follow the process in accordance with current international conventions.
