Kim Jong-un's sister threatens retaliation after US aircraft carrier arrives in South Korea

Pyongyang, March 5 – Tension on the Korean peninsula is rising after Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, issued a strong warning to the United States over the deployment of a US aircraft carrier in South Korean waters.

"The enemy will pay the price for these military provocations that threaten our security," Kim Yo-jong said in a statement issued by the state agency KCNA.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier, accompanied by a naval strike group, arrived in South Korea to carry out joint exercises with South Korean forces, an action that Pyongyang considers a direct provocation and a rehearsal for an invasion.

Kim Yo-jong, one of the most influential figures in the North Korean regime, warned that her country will retaliate "in its own way," without specifying what kind of measures it will take.

This new episode of confrontation occurs in a context of increasing missile tests by North Korea and joint military exercises between Seoul and Washington, which increases the risk of a military escalation in the region.

The United States and South Korea have defended the presence of the aircraft carrier as a deterrent measure against North Korea's continued ballistic missile tests, while Pyongyang insists that it will respond with military action if it deems it necessary.
